I’ve blogged once before about Alice Herz-Sommer, the oldest pianist in the world. What makes her extraordinary is not her age and ability, though they are remarkable. It’s not even the fact that she’s a Holocaust survivor, as incredible as that is too. What really makes Alice remarkable is her joy.
That is a lesson worth taking from this amazing women, especially in this era of anger, hatred, and mutually assured destruction between warring parties everywhere in the world.
For storytellers, and speakers, it’s important to remember as well. We are tempted always to tell stories of violence and death, because of the shock value and the fascination that those stories offer. But in the long run, I still believe that kindness and joy will win out over harsh dealing and pain. And that music has healing power. Alice Herz-Sommer is proof. Living proof.
Her story will soon be told again in a full-length documentary. I urge everyone to see it. Spread the joy.
What a beautiful soul. Thank you for sharing this, Nick….
Hi, Lori — so good to hear from you, and glad you enjoyed getting to know Alice!
An amazing and inspirational woman. I first read about her in a book called “A Century of Wisdom,” and I’m so glad to have heard of her. Her story is incredible. Thanks for spreading the word on her!
I agree, Terry, and thanks for your comment!
